A good web resource for identifying Orange County butterflies can be
found here.
Section 5.8 of Volume II of the 2002 Parkside Estates Final EIR said that this federal Species of Concern couldn't be found:
"Saltmarsh skipper butterfly (Panoquina errans) larvae feed on saltgrass in local coastal areas, and it may occur wherever the plant is found; however, it was not observed during the surveys, and there is very little of the host plant on the site. "
Well, the EIR proved to be wrong once again! :-) Dr. Rudi Mattoni
of the Urban Wildlands Group
has confirmed that these are wandering skipper photographs.
Locations where wandering skippers have been found. The
northernmost
"W" on the county parcel is approximately where Shea wants to build
their
seawall (which is prohibited by the Coastal Act). Sightings
peaked dramatically on Labor Day weekend 2003 when perhaps two dozen
wandering skippers were seen on the lower county parcel.
Nectaring in some alkali seaheath (Frankenia salina, a saltmarsh indicator species) on the lower county parcel.
Hanging out in some saltgrass (Distichlis spicata) on the lower

this species.
