Summary

It's a wrap.  The 2005-2006 ponding season concluded with some final rainfall on May 22, 2006.

The following map shows all areas of hydrologically significant ponding (at least 7 consecutive days) for the 2005-2006 season:

Ponding sequences for the entire property have been highlighted in light blue.  Note that the county records rainfall totals at 8:00AM each day for the preceeding 24 hours.  Thus due to the county's time lag, they may report rainfall a day or two later than I do (I live 100 yds from the site and record my personal rainfall observations during the same calendar day that the rain actually fell).

City Parcel Adjacent to the Wintersburg Channel

Ponding at this location was severely impaired after Shea used a box blade scraper to fill the area with 4 inches of soil shortly after CCC staff ecologist Dr. John Dixon issued a draft memo in December 2005 finding that wetlands were present at this location (the so-called "WP" area).

City Parcel Western Agricultural Boundary

This location poses an interesting interpretation challenge this season.  Beginning in January 2006, groundwater-fed ponding appeared at the western edge of the lower agricultural area, as well as at several other locations throughout the city of Huntington Beach.  There were no significant rainstorms between mid-January and late February, so the water you see in the inital 46-day ponding sequence below is almost entirely groundwater.

In order to alleviate damage in residential areas, the city switched its water supply to 100% groundwater pumping.  This caused the Shea property ponding to dwindle noticeably by the end of February 2006.

Significant rainfall returned at the end of February 2006.  But the second ponding sequence below has exhibited greater persistence compared to previous ponding in prior seasons during the month of March.  So it is possible that groundwater is still playing at role at this location.

Former County Parcel Vernal Pools

There are two large vernal pools on the former county parcel which are the champion ponders of the property.  After large rainstorms, these two adjacent pools merge into a single large pool.  As the water evaporates, the pool splits in two.
