Traffic Conditions on Graham Street
Last updated September 6, 2002
This page documents Graham Street traffic conditions at both peak
and non-peak periods. The Marine View gymnasium project completion
will worsen this traffic load, as will the proposed Parkside development.
Graham Street Peak Traffic - February 14, 2002 7:30AM - 7:40AM
The
following video clips were shot during the Marine View morning rush with a
Canon Powershot G2 digital camera. This camera is really intended for
taking still photographs, but is also capable of taking 30-second video clips
of so-so quality. If somebody wants to re-shoot this with a real video
camera to get higher quality images, please feel free!
The first clip is looking north on Graham towards the intersection with Glenstone.
Note the southbound cars coming over the bridge and turning right (west)
onto Glenstone. These Glenstone cars will then do a U-turn at Hillgate
to come back out and cross Graham as shown in the third clip.

The second clip was shot from the Graham bridge over the Wintersburg Channel.
Notice the southbound cars illegally passing on the right in the bike
lane -- these cars will turn right (west) onto Glenstone, then do a U-turn
at Hillgate to come back out and cross Graham as shown in the third clip.

Glenstone U-turns - September 6, 2002, 7:33AM
The third clip was shot from the southwest corner of the Hillgate/Glenstone
intersection looking east towards Graham. Note the cars turning in
from Graham and making a U-turn to go back out across Graham. You would
not see this behavior if the Graham/Glenstone intersection were not already
overloaded.

Graham Street Non-peak Traffic
This footage dates from 1998 and shows some non-peak traffic flow on Graham
Street. The traffic that will be added by Parkside plus other area
developments will likely result in dangerous conditions due to the blind
visibility of the bridge over the Wintersburg Channel.

Omitted Marine View Middle School Enrollment Growth
One of the key deficiencies in the Parkside EIR is a traffic study that
relies on Graham Street car counts from 1996. The following chart of
OVSD enrollment statistics for Marine View show that they managed to count
cars when Marine View had its lowest enrollment of the past decade!
